Berlin car crash: 14 children injured and their teacher killed as trip to German capital 'ends in nightmare'

Fourteen children were injured and their teacher killed as a school trip to Berlin "ended in a nightmare" - with a car being driven into the group.

A year-old man, believed to be the driver, with German-Armenian dual citizenship was detained, German police told Sky News.

Iris Spranger, the city's interior affairs minister, suggested the motorist may have had mental health issues.

She said: "The latest evidence suggests this is a case of a mentally ill person running amok."

Berlin police spokesman Martin Dams said earlier it was unclear whether the incident was an accident or the driver had intentionally ploughed into the crowd.

The man had been driving a small Renault car, Bild reported.

According to witnesses, he initially ran away and was stopped and handed over to police, it added.

The children are from the small town of Bad Arolsen in the central German state of Hesse, and are reportedly in the 10th grade, meaning they are aged 16 and Their female teacher died at the scene.

On 8 June , a person drove a car onto the sidewalk at the corner of Kurfürstendamm and Rankestraße across from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Charlottenburg, Berlin, Germany, killing one person and injuring 17 people.[1] The suspect was arrested at the scene.[2][3]

At around local time, a person in a Renault Clio drove onto the sidewalk at the end of the Kurfürstendamm on the corner of Rankestraße in Berlin running into a group of pedestrians. The driver then continued across the intersection onto Tauentzienstraße and finally crashed into the window of a Douglas cosmetics store one block further on the corner of Marburger Straße. The driver was detained by passersby before being arrested by the police.[4][1]

Seventeen people were injured, including 14 school children. One person, a schoolteacher, died.[5][6][1]

The suspect was identified as a year-old man holding dual German and Armenian citizenship.[4&#

One dead and three injured in high speed crash on Tauentzienstraße

A serious accident took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Tauentzienstraße in Charlottenburg after a speeding car lost control and crashed. The police described the incident as an “Alleinrennen”, a solo race.

According to fire department officials, the vehicle crashed into a concrete wall and caught fire after travelling at high speeds. A woman in the car was killed, while the driver and two other passengers were seriously injured. One passenger was able to escape the wreck, while two others had to be freed from the crashed vehicle by emergency services.

Some witnesses to the accident tried to help the victims in the moments immediately following the crash. Five of these first respondents also suffered minor injuries, while two police officers were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

The area around Tauentzienstraße and Ku’damm in Charlottenburg is well known for illegal racing &#; and tragic deadly crashes of this kind are a relatively common result.
